I thought I might share a couple of quilts that didn’t make my blog last year.

This quilt was a beautiful appliqué quilt by Helen a real labour of love. The feathery quilting was delicate to complement her gentle design and colour choices.

We were both delighted with how the quilting finished the quilt.

It is that time again for the Australian Machine Quilting Festival.  2012 will prove to be bigger and better than the last providing great learning opportunities for both domestic quilters and those with arms of varying lengths, be they short, mid or extra long.

How honoured was I to be asked to teach at this years event.  Check out the classes at the website

There will be a great number of different classes for all ability levels.  I am aiming my classes at those starting there quilting journey and will be teaching heaps of different things that can be used now…well you might have to wait until you get home, those machines are a little big for the cargo hold and I wouldn’t want to be paying the excess baggage bill.

So check it out and look forward to seeing you at the festival.  I will keep you posted along the way.

I quilted each block in turn, working with the design of the block and the fabric.  The feathered sashing and piano key border holding it altogether.  My favorite block is the spiral.  Which is yours?

This photo from the back details the quilting.

My brief from Elisha was not too tizzy or too closely quilted.  She was delighted with her quilt so I assume I got it right!

How lovely is this quilt made by Maria. Maria often uses Bali pops and jelly rolls to make her quilts. I am not sure which jelly roll book this came from. But I really like it.

It looks really modern and colourful, particularly when I was photographing it in my garden. I quilted it in a lovely pantograph pattern called Wonderland by Anne Bright. I used a lime green Aurifil cotton as the tread choice. I love my Aurifil threads.

It was great to showcase some of my own work and show off some lovely quilts that belong to other patchworkers. Thank you to my ladies who allowed me to borrow them back for the show. I took good care of them.

Another Helen also won a prize.  This quilt was very worthy of it’s ribbon.  The photo isn’t the best but I hope it shows off the stylish simplicity of her work.  I love how she has used the lines of quilting to enhance the design.  A very clever lady.

Here is Sandra with her winning small quilt.  I love the way the fabrics look like tiles.

The Pin Cushion Challenge really showcased the diversity of NOTQY members.  I am glad I didn’t have to pick the winner.

The pin cushion isn’t very clear, but it is the witch just hidden by the ribbon.  Well done you.

I did have to pick a winner with my President of  NOTYQ hat on.  This was a challenge in itself, but along with Di we both came up with the same recipient for the Presidents Award.

Great hand quilting in several shades of green.  Lovely even design too.

I don’t think Joan could look prouder!

My lovely friend Simone also won a ribbon for her quilt, Tribute to Mrs Williams.  I am so sorry Simone I didn’t get a photograph.

The quality and variety of the quilts was amazing and I have some photos to share.  I have too many for one post so I will do them in stages.

Firstly I will show you some of the winners (I don’t think I got photos of all of them unfortunately  but I am sure NOTYQ will have a comprehensive list.

Viewers choice is always eagerly awaited and this year was won by Marilyn Hayes for her gumleaf quilt. She so deserved this award as her quilt was a work of art.

I was fortunate to have been the quilter for several of the ribbon winning quilts.

This quilt belongs to Lisa and she won first time entrant with her design.  I quilted this one with a flowing overall pattern that wasn’t too tight so the quilt design shone through.

Another winner was Joan.

Not the best photos of the humans, but the quilt shows up pretty well and it does show how pleased we both were.  This was a great quilt for a quilter as it had the symmetry and open spaces for the quilting design to shine through.

Helen, another of my ladies had a great win too with her quilt.

And again a none too flattering photo of the maker and the quilter.

We kept the quilting quite traditional on this one but I hope that it was given a modern twist by adding the swags to the border.

There were many other winners and I will put them in a post tomorrow as this is getting too big to download and I need to get back to quilting.  No peace for the wicked.

Morning all, or evening if you are somewhere else in the world.  I have been working hard on my blog recently, trying to keep you posted on my quilting life  (I am not sure I have much of anything else these days!).  I have even been playing with the appearance, I do like the red and red does feature in my own quilts fairly regularly.

I arrived home with a beautiful selection of textures and colours and no ideas as to what to do with it, so it got folded nicely and put on a shelf.

That is until yesterday, when I was in desperate need of a sign for for stand at the North of the Yarra Quilters Guild bi-anual quilt show coming up this weekend.

So here we have the starting point, fabric given freely by one quilter to another.

I was getting busier and busier with stuff to get ready for the show so my friend Maria came round to help me…step two, time given to another at the drop of a hat.

Here is a picture of her I took some time ago when she was using my longarm quilting machine to quilt on the community quilts.

So then came the fun bit, cutting, fusing, creating and stitching, all mixed up with endless chat and cups of tea.  I think this counts as step three…companionship and creativity.

and the letters emerge for the sign.

Progress so far for the sign is the gathering of the letters and almost all of the stitching.  I think I might need to make another G.

Tonight the letters will become a sign.
